Designing security interfaces that everyone can operate

A protection control nobody can reach is not a protection control. How we approach WCAG 2.2 AA in qikfox interfaces and on this website.

Updated 5 min readqikfox

The short answer

Security interfaces have an unusually high accessibility duty, because the cost of a control that cannot be operated is exposure rather than inconvenience. qikfox targets WCAG 2.2 AA: full keyboard operability, visible focus, sufficient contrast, meaningful structure and text that does not depend on colour to convey state.

Key points

  • Every control must be reachable and operable by keyboard alone.
  • Focus must be visible against every background it appears on.
  • State must never be communicated by colour alone.
  • Warnings must be readable at the reading level of the general public.

Why the stakes are higher in security UI

If a decorative carousel is inoperable by keyboard, someone misses a photograph. If a protection toggle or a warning dialogue is inoperable, someone either cannot protect themselves or cannot understand why they were interrupted. The failure mode is exposure.

That reframes accessibility work from compliance to product function, and it is why we treat contrast, focus and structure as part of the security surface rather than as a finishing pass.

What we target

WCAG 2.2 AA across product interfaces and this website. In practice that means semantic structure with one heading hierarchy per page, links that describe their destination, forms with associated labels and error text, focus indicators that survive every background, and no interaction that depends on hover or pointer precision alone.

  • Keyboard operability for every control, including menus and dialogues.
  • Visible, high-contrast focus indicators.
  • Text contrast meeting AA at the sizes actually used.
  • State conveyed by text and shape, not colour alone.
  • Motion kept modest and respectful of reduced-motion preferences.

Plain language is an accessibility feature

Comprehension is part of access. A warning written for engineers excludes most of the people it interrupts, so we write warnings and protection descriptions in ordinary words and test them by reading them aloud.

Where a technical term is unavoidable, it is explained in the same sentence rather than in a documentation page nobody will open at that moment.

Telling us what we missed

Accessibility is never finished, and automated checks find only a portion of real barriers. Our accessibility statement includes a route for reporting problems, and reports about protection controls and warnings are treated as functional defects rather than cosmetic requests.
