Provenance labels help, and they cannot settle whether something is true
Signed capture data and generation disclosures are spreading across cameras, editors and platforms. They answer a narrower question than most people assume.

The short answer
Provenance systems attach signed, tamper evident records of how a file was captured and edited. They can tell you that an image came from a particular device and what was done to it afterwards. They cannot tell you that an unlabelled file is fake, or that a labelled photograph is honest about its subject.

What the systems actually record
The general design is the same across implementations. At capture or generation, a signed manifest records the device or model, a timestamp and a hash of the content. Each subsequent edit in a supporting tool appends a signed entry, so the chain can be verified later.
That gives a viewer something genuinely useful: an answer to whether the file they are looking at matches what was signed, and what happened between capture and now.
Three limits worth stating plainly
First, a signed photograph can be entirely misleading. A real camera can record a staged scene, and a correct caption is not part of what the signature covers.
Second, no label is not evidence of manipulation. Screenshots, re-encodings, messaging apps and older tools all drop the manifest, so the vast majority of honest images circulating carry nothing.
Third, the systems are strongest for people with tooling to check them and weakest for everyone else, which is exactly the population most affected by convincing fabrications.

How to read a label sensibly
Treat provenance as one signal among several. It is strong evidence about the file and weak evidence about the claim the file is being used to support.
The habits that hold up remain the old ones: look for the same event from an independent source, check whether the account posting it has any connection to the place it depicts, and be more sceptical of material that arrives already framed with an emotional conclusion.
Disclosure is a product responsibility
Where a tool generates or substantially alters media, saying so in the file and in the interface is now a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator, and several jurisdictions have written it into law with staged deadlines through 2026 and 2027.
The failure mode to avoid is a disclosure that satisfies the letter of a rule and is invisible in the place people actually look.
