The claims we decided not to make

Three promises are near-universal in security marketing and none of them survives scrutiny. A short note on why they do not appear on qikfox product pages.

The short answer

qikfox product pages avoid three standard industry claims - no logs, complete protection and total anonymity - because each one is either unverifiable by the reader or false as written. We describe mechanisms and limits instead, so the words on the page can be checked against how the product behaves.

Key points

  • No logs is unverifiable from outside; a stated retention period is checkable.
  • Complete protection is contradicted by how detection actually works.
  • Total anonymity ignores that signing in identifies you regardless of tooling.
  • Describing limits makes the remaining claims more credible, not less.

No logs

Every service keeps some operational record, if only to route traffic, prevent abuse and stop paying customers being locked out. A no-logs headline usually means no logs of a particular kind, described accurately in a policy document that fewer people read than the headline.

The useful statement is specific: what is recorded, for what purpose, for how long, and who can request it. That is something a reader can hold us to. A slogan is not.

Complete protection

Protection works from signals: known patterns, reported pages, behaviour that resembles software designed to hide. All three are strongest against what has been seen before and weakest against what was built this morning.

Claiming completeness sets up the one failure that matters most, and it does so at the worst possible moment - when someone trusted the claim instead of checking. We would rather say what is covered and what is not.

Total anonymity

A VPN changes which network can observe your destinations and which address a site sees. It does not change the fact that signing in to a service identifies you, or that scripts inside a page can record what happens on that page.

Anonymity as a product claim conflates network-level visibility with identity, and people make consequential decisions on that confusion. We describe the mechanism instead and let it be judged on what it does.

What we say instead

Product pages state the mechanism, the platforms, and the limits. Where we cannot yet be specific - because a figure or a certification is not final - we leave a clearly marked gap rather than filling it with something impressive.

This is a slower way to write a website. It also means that when we do make a claim, it is one we can stand behind when someone asks how we know.

Questions and answers

We keep the operational records needed to run and protect the service, described by category and retention in our privacy policy rather than summarised as a slogan.
