What online tracking actually collects

Tracking builds a profile across sites rather than recording a single visit. Learn the mechanisms, what each one can see, and which controls make a measurable difference.

Online tracking links your activity across different sites into one profile, using third-party cookies, embedded scripts and device characteristics that together form a fingerprint. Why the joins matter more than the visits

A single page view says little. Twenty page views across health, retail, employment and financial sites, joined to one identifier, describe a person: what they earn, what they worry about, what they intend to buy, whether they are looking for another job. The profile is the product, and the joining is what creates it.

This is why tracking is normally invisible. Nothing on a page announces that this visit will be combined with yesterday's visit somewhere else. The mechanics happen in the loading of components you never see.

The three mechanisms in plain terms

Third-party cookies are small pieces of storage set by a domain other than the site you are visiting. When the same third party appears on many sites, its cookie acts as a shared name tag, and the sites become one dataset.

Embedded scripts are code loaded from another company inside the page: analytics, advertising tags, social widgets, chat boxes, font and map providers. Each one learns which page you loaded and often what you did on it, because it runs inside the page rather than beside it.

Fingerprinting stores nothing. It identifies your browser by its combination of characteristics - screen dimensions, fonts, timezone, language, graphics behaviour, extensions. Enough small details make a combination rare, and a rare combination is a name.

What trackers do not see

It is worth being precise, because vagueness here fuels both complacency and panic. A tracker embedded in one site cannot read the contents of your other tabs, your files, or your saved passwords. It cannot decrypt traffic between you and other sites.

What it can do is observe its own presence across many sites and join those observations. The problem is breadth, not depth - and breadth is enough.

Controls that make a measurable difference

Blocking cross-site trackers removes the shared name tag and stops many scripts from loading at all, which also makes pages lighter. Reducing the identifying details a browser volunteers narrows fingerprinting, and treating each site's storage as separate prevents leftovers from becoming long-term identifiers.
