When a scam message sounds exactly like a person you know
Cheap synthesis has removed the awkward wording and the bad accent that used to give fraud away. The defence that survives is procedural, not perceptual.

The short answer
Fraud that used to be recognisable by broken language or an obviously wrong voice is now fluent and can imitate a specific person from a short sample. Because the signals people were taught to look for have stopped being reliable, the defence has to be procedural: verify through a channel you initiated, and treat urgency as the warning sign itself.
Key points
- Fluency and a familiar voice are no longer evidence of anything.
- Verification means a channel you chose, using a number or address you already had.
- Manufactured urgency is the constant across every version of this fraud.
- Agree a family or team practice in advance, while nobody is under pressure.
What got easier for the people doing this
Three things that used to require effort are now trivial: writing fluently in any language, imitating a specific voice from a few seconds of public audio, and personalising a message using details scraped from ordinary online sources.
The result is not a new category of crime. It is the same pretexts, with the tells removed. The bank fraud call, the message from a relative in trouble, the supplier asking for updated bank details, the executive requesting an urgent transfer.
The procedure that still works
Stop responding through the channel that contacted you. Hang up, close the message, and reach the person or organisation through a route you already had.
- Call back on a number you looked up yourself, not one you were given.
- For a colleague or relative, use a different channel entirely.
- For anything financial, confirm with a second person before acting.
- Never read out a code that arrived on your own device.
Urgency is the mechanism, not a detail
Every version of this depends on removing your time to think, and it is the one component that cannot be synthesised away, because without it the target verifies and the attempt fails.
So treat time pressure as the trigger for your procedure rather than as a reason to skip it. Deadlines that collapse under a five minute delay were never real.
Decide the rule before you need it
Families and teams that handle this well agreed on something simple beforehand: no money moves on a single request, and unexpected requests get confirmed on a known number. Some families use an agreed phrase, which helps, though a written rule is more robust than a secret that can be forgotten.
Say it out loud with the people it applies to. The moment the call arrives is not when anyone invents a policy.
